# HPE Aruba Instant On: Enterprise Wi-Fi, Perfect for Smart Homes

- Enterprise-grade Wi-Fi engineering from HPE/Aruba, with free cloud management and no controller hardware or subscription fees.
- Built for real network segmentation, isolating guests, cameras, and IoT devices from the rest of the home instead of leaving everything on one flat network.
- Backed by HPE's global support and warranty coverage, giving homeowners a proper support channel behind the hardware.

![Instant-On-Wi-Fi-product-family-F-780x540](https://homenetworks.com.au/hubfs/Aruba/Instant-On-Wi-Fi-product-family-F-780x540.avif "Instant-On-Wi-Fi-product-family-F-780x540")

## Why Aruba Instant On Is Our #1 Pick

### What we love:

- Real network segmentation: separate zones for trusted devices, guests, cameras and locks, and IoT gear, instead of everything sitting on one flat network.
- No controller hardware to babysit. Provisioning, client visibility, and per-AP health all run through Aruba's cloud portal or app, from anywhere.
- Automatic, scheduled firmware updates, with a notice beforehand so updates land at a quiet time rather than mid-movie night.
- More headroom than it looks like it needs: RADIUS/802.1X support if you ever want it, and scales to 25 access points per site.
- 2.5Gbps WAN port on the Secure Gateway (SG2505P), so a Home Hyperfast NBN plan isn't bottlenecked by the gateway itself. Anything below that, the SG1004 handles without issue.
- Disable an SSID in seconds from the phone app. Handy for troubleshooting, and just as handy when the kids need the Wi-Fi switched off until they do as they're told.

### What we don't:

- Logging is basic. You get a live connected-client view, not a history, so tracking down an intermittent drop-out weeks later is harder than on a full enterprise solution.
- Firewall rule creation has its own way of doing things. Fine for most people.
- Not built for granular reporting or deep customisation.
- Warranty coverage isn't uniform across the range: access points carry 2 years opposed to their switch portfolio which carries a Limited Lifetime warranty (5 years after end of sale which mind you is amazing).

### Our take:

A smart home is not one thing, it is many different devices. Every bulb, sensor, camera, and hub you add brings its own firmware, its own update cycle, and its own risk profile, and once a house is running twenty or thirty of these, treating them all the same as a laptop or phone stops making sense. This is where Aruba Instant On earns its place on our recommended list: it's the foundation layer that lets a smart home actually behave like one, with automation devices doing their job on their own segment.

The cloud side is where the trade-offs show up, and we think they're the right ones. Yes, the logging is thin and the Firewall rules work differently to what you'd write on a Juniper SRX, but that's by design, not a shortcoming. Most people setting up a home network were never going to hand-write security policies, and this gets them almost all the value without the pain points.

It also won't win any awards for a flashy dashboard. But let's be honest, how often does anyone actually log in to their router's admin page? Almost every home we talk to wants set-and-forget for the most part, not a 5 year project, and that's exactly what this is built around. For a home network, it's the right trade-off.

*If you want the full breakdown of how we structure these zones room by room, our guide to device segmentation walks through it in detail.*

### Built on the Aruba Instant On platform with a Smart Home Hub

These two boxes do very different jobs, and it's worth being clear about which is which. Aruba Instant On is the network: the gateway, switch, access points, the firewall, and the VLAN segmentation that keeps your cameras, locks, and IoT gear apart from the rest of the house. That's the part covered in detail on the rest of this page.

The Smart home hub is what runs on top of that network, not the network itself. Depending on what your setup needs, it can run a local DNS cache and ad-blocker (Technitium, Pi-hole, or AdGuard), a NAS share for your own files, a Zigbee or Z-Wave coordinator for pairing smart home devices, an MQTT broker for device-to-device messaging, Frigate for local camera AI and NVR, Tailscale for secure remote access, and Uptime Kuma to keep an eye on all of it. It sits on its own VLAN as trusted infrastructure, the same way a NAS or smart home hub does in any network we design.

Not every build runs all of these, it depends on what your home actually needs. See our NUC builds page for how we configure it for different setups.

Which bundle do I actually need?

It mostly comes down to two things: how big the home is, and how many devices you will have connected. The Starter bundle covers an apartment or small home with a single access point. The Whole-Home bundle is the right default for most houses with the VLAN segmentation that keeps guests, IoT gear, and everyday devices apart. The Advanced bundle steps up when cameras, locks, or other PoE-hungry security gear are coming into the mix and need real power and their own segment, not an afterthought bolted onto a smaller switch.

Does my internet plan affect which bundle I need?

Yes, and it's worth checking before you buy. If you're on a Home Hyperfast NBN plan, the standard SG1004 gateway becomes the bottleneck, its WAN port simply can't pass that much traffic. That's why the Advanced bundle uses the SG2505P gateway instead, which carries a 2.5Gbps WAN port built for exactly this. If you're upgrading to NBN hyperfast check [here](https://www.nbnco.com.au/learn/network-technology/hybrid-fibre-coaxial-explained-hfc-3/connection-box) for your new NBN modem info. If you're on Hyperfast but only need coverage for a small home, you don't necessarily need the full Advanced bundle, see the next question.

What if I don't fit neatly into one of the three bundles?

That's common, and it's fine. Home size and internet speed don't always line up with our three tiers, a small apartment on a Hyperfast plan is a good example: you don't need three access points, but you do need the faster gateway. In cases like that, we'll put together a solution matched to what you actually need, for instance a single AP32 paired with the SG2505P gateway, rather than selling you a bigger bundle than your home requires or a smaller one that leaves your connection capped. Get in touch and we'll size it properly before you buy anything.

Why Aruba Instant On instead of a consumer mesh kit?

A mesh kit from a big consumer brand will get a signal into every room, but it generally won't give you real segmentation, proper VLANs for guests, cameras, and IoT devices, enterprise-grade security behind it, or hardware backed by the same company (HPE/Aruba) that networks used in hospitals, warehouses, and retail chains run on. You're not just paying for coverage, you're paying for the difference between a Wi-Fi signal and an actual network. Click here to read our thoughts on Mesh Networks.

Will I need an electrician?

Possibly, depending on your home. Our (optional) installation covers mounting your hardware and configuring the network itself. If your home needs new ethernet cabling run through walls, ceilings, or between floors to get access points where they need to be, that's usually a separate job for a licensed electrician. We'll tell you during your site assessment, before anything's booked, whether that applies to your home. Click here to see our Installation page.
